Prof. Dr. Ruth Oniang’o

Director - Kenya

Dr. Ruth Khasaya Oniang’o is Professor of Nutrition at the Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenya. Her research is focused on topics such as food security, nutrition & pregnancy, childhood nutrition, and agricultural processing. She is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development. Dr. Oniang’o served the Kenyan Parliament (from 2003 to 2007) and helped to pass the National Biosafety Bill and the Nutritionists and Dietetics Bill. She also leads the Kenyan Food Security and Nutrition Taskforce that regulates the National Food and Nutrition Policy. Dr. Oniang’o has won several accolades and awards for her work in agriculture and food policy, including the Distinguished Service Medal and Silver Star. In 2014, she won the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association (IFAMA) Lifetime Award. She also won the Africa Food Prize in 2017 for her work with the Rural Outreach Program. In 2018, Oniang’o was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Aberdeen in recognition of her contributions to food science. She was cited as one of the Top 100 most influential Africans by the ‘New African’ magazine.
