The Sonnet Season is a poetic chronicle of a young college student—Narain Naidu—written between 1975 and 1980, a formative passage when rhythm first learned discipline and emotion learned restraint. These one hundred and eight poems unfold as four constellations—four seasons of the inner life—each tracing its own arc of memory, longing, discovery, and awakening.
This volume marks a rare literary confluence. For the first time in global literature, poetry is composed simultaneously within two classical traditions: English sonnets shaped by William Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter, and Sanskrit Ślokas flowing in Kālidāsa’s Vaidarbhī cadence. If Shakespeare teaches feeling to stand firm within measure, Kālidāsa allows emotion to breathe—to suggest rather than declare, to resonate through silence as much as sound.

The Western Pulse – The Iambic Measure of Shakespeare
In the 16th century, Shakespeare shaped emotion through iambic pentameter—measured breath guiding disciplined passion. From this Western lyric tradition, these poems arise: where thought walks upright in rhythm, feeling submits to form, and emotion gains strength through restraint. Here, cadence does not confine expression; it gives passion its posture, allows the inner voice to stand tall, balanced, and endure within the steady march of meter.

The Eastern Breath – Vaidarbhī Rīti, the Grace of Kālidāsa
We turn Eastward to the ancient cadence of the Sanskrit śloka. In the 4th century, Kālidāsa sang in Vaidarbhī rīti—a mode of poetic grace that is lucid, gentle, and profoundly alive. Here, emotion is not confined by measure but released through suggestion, resonance, and pause, allowing meaning to unfold softly, where silence itself becomes a bearer of truth.

The Poetic Convergence
Shakespeare gave structure to what Kālidāsa had already stirred. Together, across centuries and civilizations, they shaped a quiet chamber where rhythm becomes revelation. Between the Sonnet and the Śloka there is no divide—only a shared pursuit: to render human experience as meter, music, and lyric. One speaks through measured pulse; the other through luminous suggestion.
